Job Description

This position performs a variety of entry to mid-level professional engineering duties related to the planning, design, analysis, construction and maintenance of transportation and traffic projects for the Transportation Division within the Department of Public Works and Capital Projects.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (may not include all duties performed)

• Assists in the development of transportation design plans and specifications under the guidance of the Chief Transportation Engineer.
• Conducts field surveys and collects data to support project analysis, project planning and design phases.
• Utilizes engineering software to analyze traffic patterns and roadway designs, ensuring compliance with relevant standards.
• Collaborates with cross-functional teams to address engineering challenges and develop effective solutions.
• Performs routing drafting, engineering computations, research report writing, checking of plans, direction of field operations involved in gathering and compilation of data for the planning, design and construction of a variety of transportation projects.
• Assists in the design and analysis of transportation systems, including roadways, traffic signals and multi-modal transportation facilities.
• Assists in the review of design plans and contracts specifications, engineering cost estimates, construction schedules and engineering studies.
• Provides support in responding to consulting engineers’ questions concerning Town policies and procedures.
• Investigates, analyzes, and responds to inquiries from internal staff, residents, and businesses regarding Town policies and procedures.
• Assists in the review of traffic impact studies under the guidance of the Chief Transportation Engineer.
• Assists with the oversight and administration of the following programs:
• Residential Parking Permit Program
• Sidewalk Dining Program
• Sandwich Board Program
• Streetlight Program
• Assists in processing right-of-way permits under the guidance of the Chief Transportation Engineer
• Supports the Chief Transportation Engineer in conducting safety studies
• Maintains required records for all assigned projects as required by the Library of Virginia.
• Conducts field investigations regarding transportation-related projects as needed.
• Attends community meetings and provides technical assistance covering the Town’s transportation-related projects.
• Is considered an essential employee on a situational basis.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
