Job Description
*Position Title: *Special Education Teacher - Secondary Life Skills
*Qualifications: *Special Education Teaching Certificate and Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Special Education
*Reports to:* Director of Special Education
*Work Schedule:* 188 Days (Academic School Year) at 7.5 Hours / Day
*Function: *Direct the education and support for students with moderate to severe cognitive or developmental disabilities. This role prioritizes the development of functional life skills, personal independence, and vocational readiness to prepare students for post-secondary life.
*Responsibilities:*
1. Collaborate with teams to develop IEPs that prioritize functional academics, self-care, and secondary transition goals (Age 14+).
2. Plan and teach a program of study consistent with alternate standards, focusing on Community-Based Instruction and independent living.
3. Lead regular student luncheons; oversee students in the end-to-end process of grocery shopping, meal prepping, cooking, and professional food service to build vocational stamina.
4. Coordinate with outside agencies (e.g., OVR, MH/IDD) to ensure consistent service provision and a smooth transition to post-secondary adult life.
5. Provide or supervise personal care, medical care, and feeding of students as detailed in the IEP, ensuring dignity and safety at all times.
6. Implement and maintain augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices and other assistive technologies to give every student a voice.
7. Provide intensive support for student behavior, utilizing Positive Behavior Support Plans and de-escalation techniques to maintain a safe learning environment.
8. Establish high expectations where competence is presumed, ensuring students are included with similar-aged peers in the school community to the greatest extent possible.
9. Provide daily direction to support staff; arrange schedules, provide instructional oversight, and ensure the team is unified in supporting high-needs students.
10. Maintain rigorous record-keeping for IDEA compliance, including data collection on functional goals and transition progress.
